Fishing in Llangollen on the beautiful Welsh Dee

Llangollen-Maelor Angling Association control approximately 10 miles of excellent grayling, trout and salmon fishing in Llangollen on the Welsh Dee.

Upper Beat - fishing in Llangollen

Dereck's Pool

The first pool on the Upper Beat is Dereck's. It is a short tree-lined pool that the river has scoured out of the bedrock. The pool has a very uneven topography consisting of gullies strewn with boulders, which offer good lies for grayling, trout and salmon.

The Glide Pool is a short section of water running over a rock platform which, over millennia, has eroded channels into it. These channels provide several good low-water lies for grayling, trout and salmon.

Dee Farm

Dee Farm is the longest pool on the upper beat that is fishable from the bank. It's a good pool for fly fishing that holds grayling, brown trout and, when in season, sea trout and salmon. Also, it's a great place to fish when the river is in spate.

Fridge Pool

The Fridge Pool is a small pocket of water directly above Dee Farm. It's a good pool for fly fishing for trout and grayling when the Welsh Dee is close to its summer level. Also, it occasionally produces sea trout and salmon after a flood when the river level dropping.

The Top Pool is at the end of Upper Beat, reached after a challenging walk through the wood above the Fridge Pool. However, it is worth the effort because the pool holds plenty of grayling and brown trout. It's also a good sea trout and salmon pool.
